Youth Shelter
Escaping abuse or neglect; running from a drug or alcohol problem in the home; being thrown out of their home; or simply feeling they just don't belong.

There are multiple reasons why teens run away. Sometimes they are forced to leave, and sometimes it is the only choice they have.  No matter what the motive, young people do not have to place themselves at risk by living on the streets.

Runaways have a safer alternative.  EOC's Sanctuary Youth Shelter provides runaway, homeless, exploited, or otherwise displaced youth with emergency shelter, a hot meal, clothing, crisis intervention, counseling, and family reunification.

The Sanctuary Youth Shelter is the only self-referral shelter between Bakersfield and Stockton and is recognized as a National Safe Place. It works in collaboration with the local government and many community businesses to provide comprehensive services to runaway youth.

Eligibility:

Youth must:

  • be between the ages of 11-17
  • not be under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of entry
  • not have a history of violence, serious mental illness, sexual offenses, or arson
